Earlier this week, Kristeligt Dagblad reported, based on figures from the Ministry of Church Affairs, that despite much debate about the churches' right to object to solar cell and wind turbine projects, it has only been used seven times in the period 2017-2024. The article also reported that the Diocese of Lolland-Falster, with three objections, was the diocese that had objected to solar or wind projects the most times. However, these figures have upset Bishop Marianne Gaarden of the Diocese of Lolland-Falster.
In a comment in the newspaper she states that none of the diocese's three objections have put a stop to green projects. In the letter, the bishop states that the churches' right of objection is often referred to as a "veto right", which is not the reality "neither in theory nor in practice." Furthermore, she believes that political voices link the Danish Church's right of objection with opposition from the Danish Church to the green transition. However, this is far from the case, writes the bishop, who believes that climate change is a greater threat to medieval churches and cemeteries than the sight of a windmill.
"As the Danish Church, we have a common interest with the rest of society to reduce climate change as much as possible and contribute to the green transition," writes Marianne Gaarden.
