Several words can describe the year 2025, but the word "iron fields" draws the longest straw and can be chosen as the Word of the Year. A jury in the radio program "Klog på Sprog" on DR P1 decided on Friday.
Among the nominated words or expressions were also "anti-Semitism", "spiritual armament", "drones", "genocide" and "remigration".
The choice in the radio program was ultimately between the words "skyggeflåde" and "jernmarker", which was described by a jury member as a choice between the local and the global.
With a majority of three out of five votes from the jury, "jernmarker" ended up being the Word of the Year.
In the past year, the leader of the Danish Democrats, Inger Støjberg, has used the word jernmarker several times to describe that the party wants cornfields and does not want Denmark's fields to be filled with solar cells.
Støjberg put her hands over her head when Ritzau told her that "jernmarker" had been chosen as the Word of the Year.
- I'm really happy about that. I think it describes solar cells very well, for what they are. A really boring piece of iron that bothers the eye and doesn't really contribute much, she says.
She describes that more people use the word, and that it has become part of the Danish language.
Inspired from Sweden
Støjberg does not believe that she can take credit for the word, as it is the party's political spokesperson, Susie Jensen, who she believes invented the word.
According to Støjberg, the word should have been translated from a Swedish term for windmills.
The jury consisted of Thomas Hestbæk Andersen, director of the Danish Language Board, Lars Trap-Jensen, senior editor of the Danish Language and Literature Society, the two former hosts of "Sproglaboratoriet" on P1 Christoffer Emil Bruun and Helle Solvang, and the host of "Klog på Sprog", Adrian Hughes.
The Danish Language Board had from hundreds of words that the Danes had submitted, 11 words were selected.
In addition, each jury member brought two words, which included words such as "ick", "toldhammer" and "manosfæren". Out of these ten words, the word "ägte" was included as a so-called wildcard.
DR, in collaboration with the Danish Language Board, has chosen the Word of the Year since 2008.
