On Thursday night, Russia launched 420 drones and 39 missiles into large parts of Ukraine. Several people were injured. Housing, gas infrastructure and transformer stations were hit. This was reported by the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyj, on the social media X.
- Destruction has been recorded in eight regions, where many private homes and apartment buildings have been damaged. At present, several people have been registered as injured - including children - as a result of this attack, Zelensky writes.
However, most of the missiles launched were intercepted by Ukraine's air defense system.
- Most of the missiles launched today were intercepted thanks to our partners, who have quickly sent part of the air defense missiles agreed upon at the recent Ramstein meeting, the president writes.
The so-called Contact Group for the Defense of Ukraine (UDCG) met earlier in February and promised in this connection to send more air defense to the country.
The group is called the Ramstein Group after the American Ramstein military base in Germany and coordinates deliveries of military equipment to Ukraine.
Attacks on energy infrastructure hit the population
Russian attacks on Ukraine's energy infrastructure have left tens of thousands of Ukrainians without heat and electricity this winter, when temperatures have been well below freezing.
- The cold has not yet completely subsided, and air defense missiles are needed every day as Russia continues its attempts to destroy our energy system.
- I thank everyone who understands this and helps us, writes Zelenskyj.
The Russian attacks have taken place on the same day that negotiators from Ukraine and the United States are meeting in Geneva, Switzerland.
Ukraine's chief negotiator, Rustem Umerov, is to meet with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner as part of preparations for further negotiations on a peace agreement with Russia.
