The public prosecutor in Viborg has decided to close a case against the former Maersk Oil and Gas regarding chemical discharges in the North Sea without bringing charges. This is what the prosecution writes in a press release.

Maersk Oil and Gas, which is currently owned by the energy company TotalEnergies, was reported to the police by the Danish Environmental Protection Agency in 2017 for having discharged a chemical with a red hazard classification without a permit between 2009 and 2017.

The case has been stopped because the State Attorney assesses that it cannot be proven in court that Maersk acted intentionally and negligently in connection with the discharge, and that the company thereby violated the discharge order in a punishable manner.

Maersk Oil and Gas was sold to TotalEnergies in August 2017.

The investigation into the discharges was initially stopped in March 2019. However, in August 2019, the prosecution decided to resume the case after a request for new information. information in the case from a former employee.

The police questioned several former employees of Maersk and asked authorities in Norway and the UK for help in the investigation regarding the role of the supplier and the manufacturer in the case.

The investigation has shown that the composition of the chemical in question was changed without Maersk being informed.

Therefore, Maersk was also not informed of the change in the chemical's environmental classification.
