US opens the tap for Venezuelan oil to Cuba

The United States is easing oil sanctions against Cuba, which has been cut off from Venezuelan oil since January.

The United States will grant permission to companies that apply for a license to resell Venezuelan oil to Cuba. The US Treasury Department announced this on its website.

The US government does not want the oil to end up with the communist regime or the Cuban military. Therefore, licenses for the resale of oil to the private sector will only be approved. Secretary of State Marco Rubio warns that the previous sanctions will be reimposed if the oil ends up in the wrong places.

- Cuba needs to change. It needs to change dramatically because it is the only chance to improve the quality of life for the country's people. It is a system that is collapsing and they need dramatic reforms, says Marco Rubio.

The US Secretary of State believes that the current crisis in Cuba may be the biggest since Fidel Castro's revolution, but that the communist regime has only itself to thank.

- The US would like to see them implement dramatic reforms that open up the possibility of both economic and, in the long term, political freedom for the Cubans, says Rubio.

Cuba has been dependent on Venezuelan oil for 25 years, but supplies stopped in early January when the US military captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. At the same time as the capture, the US took control of Venezuela's oil.

Later in January, US President Donald Trump signed a decree that was intended to punish countries that wanted to supply oil to Cuba. This has led to a fuel shortage in Cuba, which has introduced a number of emergency measures to minimize consumption.

The government announced in early February that it would prioritize fuel for the health service, defense, and food and water supplies.

To reduce consumption, Cuba's government has also introduced a four-day work week, so that only work must be done from Monday to Thursday in state-owned companies.
