The EU is re-establishing a cooperation agreement with Syria, 15 years after it was partially suspended. This is according to a press release from a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels on Monday.

The agreement, which deals with trade and economic cooperation, was suspended as a result of the former Assad regime's repression of the Syrian population in 2011. This meant, among other things, that restrictions were imposed on imports of oil, oil products, gold, precious metals and diamonds from Syria.

According to the EU countries, Monday's decision is "an important step towards strengthening bilateral relations between the EU and Syria." Today's meeting in Brussels will also be attended by Syria's Foreign Minister, Andrij Sybiha.

The Assad regime fell in December 2024. The family of first Hafez al-Assad and then his son Bashar al-Assad had been in power in Syria for half a century when Bashar al-Assad was overthrown.

- The decision sends a clear political signal about the EU's commitment to resume dialogue with Syria and support its economic recovery, the EU countries wrote in a press release.
