The captain of a vessel that was boarded by the Swedish Coast Guard off Trelleborg on Sunday afternoon has been arrested. The Swedish prosecutor's office said in a press release.
The vessel is a tanker named "Jin Hui". According to a post on X by Sweden's Minister of Civil Defense, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, it is suspected of being part of the Russian so-called shadow fleet and of sailing under a false flag. The ship is on the EU, UK and Ukraine's sanctions lists, the minister wrote.
According to the Swedish prosecutor's office, the arrested captain is suspected of using a false document. The captain is a Chinese citizen and is also suspected of violating Swedish maritime law.
- The arrested person will be questioned during the day, and contact with other countries and authorities has been initiated, says Senior Prosecutor Adrien Combier-Hogg, who is leading the investigation, in a press release from the prosecution.
Ship was boarded on Sunday
According to the Swedish public service media SVT, resources from the police helicopter unit and the national task force participated in the boarding of the ship on Sunday
- The boarding was carried out as planned on Sunday. The police's task has been to secure the mooring with specially trained operators from the national task force, the police wrote on their website on Sunday.
This is the fifth vessel that has been boarded by Swedish authorities in a short time, writes SVT. According to the website Marinetraffic, the ship is sailing under the Syrian flag. It is 182 meters long.
According to SVT, the Swedish Coast Guard has been following the ship "for some time". The media writes that the vessel is said to be unloaded and that its destination is unknown. The term shadow fleet refers to older tankers that sail with, among other things, oil and that are trying to circumvent sanctions against Russia.
