After almost seven years as Director-General for Energy, Ditte Juul Jørgensen was appointed Director-General for Trade Policy in the EU on Tuesday. The highest-ranking Danish official in the EU Commission now takes on a new top position with influence on one of the EU's most important areas.
- Trade policy is one of the EU's most effective tools and plays a crucial role for the EU's economic security at a time when we are experiencing geopolitical crisis, economic challenges and climate change. I hope to be able to draw on some of my experience from working on the energy crisis and more broadly my experience in the EU system, and I am very much looking forward to returning to trade policy, says Ditte Juul Jørgensen in a press release.
Ditte Juul Jørgensen is 60 years old and has almost 34 years of employment in the EU Commission. Including 20 years of experience with trade policy and five years as head of cabinet for Margrethe Vestager. It was in the period 2014-2019 that Margrethe Vestager was EU Commissioner responsible for competition.
Important area for the EU
The position of Director-General in the Commission is roughly equivalent to the position of head of department in a Danish context. And when it comes to trade, it is also one of the most important areas for the EU.
The EU has exclusive competence over trade policy. This means that it is the EU Commission that negotiates and concludes trade agreements on behalf of all 27 member states.
Trade agreements have become particularly important after US President Donald Trump began imposing tariffs not only on European goods, but also on goods from other nations in the world. This has suddenly opened a window for the EU.
In a short time, it has succeeded in concluding otherwise difficult trade agreements with, among others, India, Australia and the South American Mercosur countries.

Moving from Directorate-General for Energy
She is moving to the new position after almost seven years as Director-General of the European Commission's Directorate-General for Energy. Here, since August 2019, she has led the work on the EU's energy transition under the Green Deal.
And has helped to handle both the energy crisis in connection with Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the EU's phasing out of Russian energy.
Recently, she has worked closely with Danish EU Commissioner Dan Jørgensen, who was appointed Commissioner for Energy and Housing in von der Leyen's second EU Commission.
The practice in the EU Commission is that a Director-General typically holds the job for five to seven years.
