Dansk Metal: Denmark should extract more oil and gas from the North Sea

The uncertainty surrounding the Strait of Hormuz is leading Dansk Metal to call for increased Danish production of oil and gas from the North Sea to strengthen energy independence. According to the union, Denmark and Europe are vulnerable when a large part of energy consumption is based on imports from politically unstable regions. Therefore, Denmark should make greater use of its own resources.

- The uncertain situation with the Strait of Hormuz clearly shows how vulnerable we are in Europe when more than half of our energy consumption is imported from, among other places, the Middle East. The Danish economy and Danish companies must not be dependent on instability in the Middle East to gain access to energy, says Emil Drevsfeldt Nielsen, head of business policy at Dansk Metal.

Dansk Metal also points out that the extraction of oil and gas in the North Sea should continue towards 2050 within the framework of the North Sea Agreement, and that existing licenses should be extended.

- This is important for the Danish economy in the short and long term, and it contributes substantially to our healthy public finances. At the same time, the next chapter of the green transition can be financed with money from the North Sea, says Emil Drevsfeldt Nielsen.

At the same time, the union emphasizes that increased oil and gas production must go hand in hand with investments in the green transition, including electrification of the industry, expansion of the electricity grid and a clear course towards climate neutrality in 2045.

- A new government must put full turbo on the green transition. It's about electrification – especially of industry – a significantly stronger electricity grid and a clear course towards climate neutrality by 2045. Otherwise, we will lose both competitiveness and jobs, says Emil Drevsfeldt Nielsen.
