Energinet has entered into a cooperation agreement with four European transmission system operators to investigate joint solutions for offshore power cables in the North Sea. The initiative should be seen in the light of an energy system with increasing electricity exchange across national borders and a growing expansion of offshore wind.

The cooperation includes Energinet as well as Elia from Belgium, 50Hertz from Germany and TenneT, which operates in both Germany and the Netherlands, Energinet said in a press release.

The aim is to make the handling of faults on submarine cables faster and more efficient, while reducing the overall costs to society. At the same time, the cooperation will contribute to increasing the robustness of the overall European electricity system.

- Submarine cables are part of our common critical infrastructure, and therefore cooperation is not just an advantage - it is a necessity. By working closely with our neighboring countries and actors around the North Sea infrastructure, we can share experiences and use resources more efficiently. This strengthens the robustness of the electricity grid and supports a secure and stable electricity supply, says Steffan Ladegaard Morrison, Area Manager in Asset at Energinet.

The parties are now beginning a study phase that is expected to last at least one year. This will identify opportunities for joint solutions and potential efficiency gains.
