The construction of new onshore wind turbines in Denmark is slow.
A report from Green Power Denmark shows that eight new wind turbines were built last year.
But when 32 older and outdated wind turbines were dismantled at the same time, capacity only grew by the equivalent of 2,300 households' consumption.
2025 was no lone swallow. In the past three years, only 21 wind turbines have been built on land.
Sad
Camilla Holbech, director of renewable energy production, calls it a "sad development".
- Danish companies are world champions in producing wind turbines, the wind blows almost constantly in this country, and we need the cheap, green energy from wind turbines more than ever, she says.
She believes that the increasing costs of, among other things, connecting wind energy to the electricity grid are a large part of the explanation.
While there are problems with wind turbines, there is continued strong growth in the number of solar cells. Last year, 897 megawatts of solar cells were connected, which is higher than in both 2023 and 2024.
However, Camilla Holbech believes that the development can also quickly go the other way, because the projects are often several years in the making.
Therefore, the continued expansion of renewable energy requires that development companies can still see prospects in building new plants a few years ahead.
- The consumption of electricity and the construction of new electricity connections must increase in pace to ensure progress in the green transition. That is why an electrification plan is needed, she says.
