In light of rising energy prices, the European Commission is proposing that member states provide subsidies to replace gas and oil boilers with heat pumps and solar cells. This is happening at a press conference on Wednesday, where the European Commission has presented an energy proposal that is intended to stem rising energy prices in the wake of the war in Iran.

In Denmark, homeowners who switch their heating supply from an oil or gas boiler to a heat pump have been able to receive government subsidies for several years. According to the European Commission, the goal is to protect consumers and businesses from sudden price increases and thus limit the "socio-economic" consequences due to the Iran war.

The EU is proposing several different initiatives to member states. They can be seen as a kind of toolbox that individual countries can use. The goal is generally to boost the electrification of Europe with targeted efforts aimed at both businesses and consumers. Among other things, the EU should also strengthen the overall coordination of energy stocks of oil and gas, the proposal says.

- Our AccelerateEU strategy will provide both immediate and more structural relief for European citizens and businesses. We must accelerate the transition to clean energy, says EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.

- This will give us energy independence and security and make us better equipped to withstand geopolitical storms, she says.

Rising prices for jet fuel after the conflict in Iran are also prompting the EU to propose a so-called "fuel observatory". The aim is to monitor the EU's fuel stocks in the transport sector.

- This will make it possible to quickly identify potential shortages and, in the event of the release of emergency stocks, to take targeted measures to maintain a balanced distribution of fuel, the recommendations say.
