(Arkivfoto).

The United States will begin helping stranded ships out of the Strait of Hormuz on Monday. This is what US President Donald Trump wrote on his social media, Truth Social. The operation in the Strait of Hormuz will begin Monday morning local time.

According to the president, countries from around the world have asked the United States for help in getting the ships out of the strategically important bottleneck in the Middle East.

- For the sake of Iran, the Middle East and the United States, we have told these countries that we are directing their ships safely out of these restricted waters so that they can freely and effectively continue their business, Trump writes.

Trump refers to it as a humanitarian operation, as several ships are starting to run out of food and other supplies, according to the president.

- The movement of ships is solely intended to free people, companies and countries who have done absolutely nothing wrong - they are simply victims of circumstances, Trump writes in the post.

100 planes and 15,000 soldiers

The US military will support the operation. The US military's Central Command, Centcom, wrote on Monday night on the social media X. The military will assist with warships, over 100 aircraft and 15,000 soldiers, Centcom said.

The US military describes it as a defensive mission aimed at restoring free navigation for ships through the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the maritime intelligence company AXSMarine, there were more than 900 merchant ships in the Persian Gulf at the end of April. When the war broke out, there were more than 1,100 commercial vessels in the area, the AFP news agency reports.

Shipping in the Strait of Hormuz has largely come to a standstill after the US and Israel launched a war against Iran on February 28. Iran responded by, among other things, shutting down most shipping traffic in the strait.

Energy prices have soared worldwide, as a large part of the world's oil and natural gas is normally transported through the narrow strait that connects the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman.

After several weeks of war, the United States and Iran agreed to a temporary ceasefire in early April. Since the first and so far only physical meeting between an Iranian and an American delegation took place in April in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad, there has been no progress in the negotiations.

In his latest post on Truth Social, Trump writes that there are currently what he calls very positive discussions with Iran.  Iran's Interior Ministry stated earlier Sunday that the United States has responded to a 14-point peace proposal that the Iranians have sent via Pakistani mediators.
