Equinor has put the Eirin field into production in the North Sea, and the gas is now being exported to Europe via the Gina Krog and Sleipner A platforms. Equinor said in a press release.
The field contains expected resources of around 27.6 million barrels of oil equivalent, primarily gas. The discovery was made as early as 1978, but was abandoned at the time due to lack of profitability. In 2023, it was reassessed in light of increased demand for Norwegian gas after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.
- The partnership saw an opportunity to contribute to Europe's energy security in a challenging time. We laid out an ambitious plan for a rapid, cost-effective and safe expansion, which has now been realized. Eirin will extend production from the Gina Krog platform by seven years. This means gas for Europe and continued good value creation from the jobs linked to the platform, says Linda Kåda Høiland, senior vice president for late-life fields at Equinor.
The partnership behind the field consists of Equinor and ORLEN Upstream Norway.
Eirin is developed as a subsea facility connected to the Gina Krog platform, while the gas is exported via Sleipner A, which is a central hub for Norwegian gas exports to Europe.
The total investments are estimated at 4.5 billion DKK, and the project can extend the economic life of Gina Krog from 2029 to 2036.
