TØNDER: A clear no from the citizens of Tønder Municipality in 22 referendums for as many planned wind turbine projects is the result. Over 9,000 citizens were given the opportunity to participate in indicative digital votes, and in the vast majority of areas the resistance was significant. This is reported by JydskeVestkysten.
In several local communities, voter turnout exceeded 70 percent, and in Østerby-Daler as many as 82 percent said no to three planned 180-meter wind turbines. Only one project – with 14 wind turbines at Vester Terp – showed a fairly even distribution between yes and no votes with 53.2 percent no and 44 percent yes.
The votes were held as part of Tønder Municipality's ambition to make room for around 125 wind turbines and 1,500 hectares of solar cells. The municipality is currently processing applications for 73 turbines, and the 22 votes cover projects with a total of around 110 wind turbines. The results will now be discussed politically when the city council meets on December 18. According to local media, a heated debate is expected here about which projects – despite the significant popular opposition – can proceed in the planning process.
