The Norwegian Ministry of Energy has on Thursday completed the two applications for the allocation of project areas for floating offshore wind in Utsira Nord. Both applicants met the requirements and the ministry has therefore decided that each applicant will be allocated an area. This is stated by the Norwegian Ministry of Energy in a press release.

The two consortia that will be allocated areas are a collaboration between Equinor Utsira Nord AS and Vårgrønn Utsira Nord AS, as well as the consortium Harald Hårfagre AS, which consists of Deep Wind Offshore Norway AS and EDF Renouvelables International SAS.

- I am pleased that we can now move forward and allocate project areas in Utsira Nord to two strong applicants. These projects will contribute to developing technology for floating offshore wind and increasing the production of renewable energy in southwestern Norway, says Terje Aasland, Minister of Energy.

After the allocation, the companies can submit proposals for impact assessment programs, conduct assessments and apply for a license. Licence applications must be submitted within two years of the approval of the impact assessment.

Both consortia will be entitled to participate in the competition for state aid. If both participate, the one with the lowest support need will be awarded funds. The ceiling for state aid is set at 35 billion DKK, and the winning project must be developed with a capacity as close to 500 MW as possible, depending on the turbine size.

The background to the decision is the Norwegian government's goal to allocate areas for 30 GW of offshore wind production by 2040. The areas in Utsira Nord are exclusively suitable for floating offshore wind technology.

Norway's first offshore wind auction was decided last year. Here, the consortium Ventyr won the right to develop up to 1.5 GW in the Sørlige Nordsjø II area with a bid of 115 NOK/kWh (74 DKK).
