Energinets pauses new connections to the electricity grid - capacity close to being exhausted

Energinet announces a temporary pause for new connections to the electricity grid. This is to ensure "calm and overview".

Energinet is putting new connection projects to the electricity grid on hold. The state-owned company that operates and develops the electricity grid has announced this in a press release.

This is a "temporary pause", the company says. The pause will last three months "or until a comprehensive overview of the consequences of current demand has been created and new initiatives have been implemented that can increase capacity".

The reason is that applications for connection to the electricity grid - for example from data centers and Power-to-X facilities - are flowing in at an unexpectedly high pace. This is happening at the same time that the capacity of the electricity transmission grid, according to Energinet, is "close to being exhausted".

The pause is intended to provide "calm and overview", says Director of System Responsibility at Energinet Kim Willerslev Jakobsen.

- Energinet is already building a lot of electricity grids, and we have more projects underway than ever. But we need to build more electricity grids - and we need to do it faster. At the same time, we are in a situation where demand exceeds the capacity that we can realistically make available in the short term. This not only affects customers directly connected to the transmission grid, but can also be felt in the local distribution grids. Therefore, we need to temporarily create calm and overview so that we can act responsibly and ensure that the capacity is used where it makes the most difference, says the director in the announcement.

Projects with an already concluded agreement on grid connection will not be affected by the temporary pause. However, no new agreements will be signed during the break period, and all other projects must expect longer processing times, Energinet informs.

Emergency package on the way

According to Energinet, work is being accelerated to increase the capacity of the electricity grid at the same time as the break for new connection agreements.

An emergency package is being implemented that, among other things, focuses on "faster investment decisions" and a sharper prioritization of customers who are in line to be connected to the electricity grid. The work is already underway and will be further developed in close dialogue with grid companies and stakeholders in the coming weeks.

- The electricity grid is one integrated system. This means that for a period of time we must make faster investment decisions, tighten prioritization and ensure that capacity not only follows new applications, but also supports the organic growth and stability of the collective electricity supply system, says Kim Willerslev Jakobsen.
