The Danish Parliament on Tuesday elected Søren Gade of the Liberal Party as Speaker. This was made clear after a meeting in the Danish Parliament Hall at the second meeting of the newly formed Danish Parliament after the general election on March 24.
Søren Gade was elected as interim Speaker at the first meeting of the Danish Parliament on Friday last week, but he was to be re-elected as early as Tuesday.
This time his term as Speaker will run until the opening of the Danish Parliament, which will take place on Tuesday 6 October. A Speaker will again have to be elected here.
Søren Gade has been Speaker of the Danish Parliament since December 2022. He will step down from his post when the Danish Parliament meets again after the summer break in October.
- I am Speaker until the Danish Parliament meets on the first Tuesday in October. Then I will go up to His Majesty the King, and then another chairman will take over, he said earlier on Tuesday to TV 2.
Messerschmidt new in the Presidium
In addition to the chairman, four vice-chairmen were also elected on Tuesday, who have also been elected until October 6. The Speaker and the Deputy Speakers together constitute the Presidium of the Folketing.
The Presidium monitors the internal affairs of the Folketing, for example the management of the meetings in the Folketing Hall, the operation and official representation of the Folketing.
The Speaker and the Deputy Speakers of the Folketing are elected by a majority in the Folketing for one year at a time, when a new parliamentary year begins in October. The four Deputy Speakers come from the four largest parties that do not hold the position of Speaker.
Therefore, in practice, it is always the five largest parties in the Folketing that are represented in the Presidium, which now consists exclusively of men.
The chairman of the Danish People's Party, Morten Messerschmidt, announced a few days ago that he will settle into the Presidium - which he called a "talking club that is about appeasing the government" to DR.
1. Vice-chairman will be Leif Lahn Jensen (S), 2nd vice-chairman is Karsten Hønge (SF), while Morten Messerschmidt will be 3rd vice-chairman.
Liberal Alliance has elected Lars-Christian Brask as 4th vice-chairman.
Only Morten Messerschmidt is new to the Presidium.
