Andel Energi reduces CO2 from hosting by 94 percent.

Changes in hosting and technical architecture have significantly lowered emissions without affecting functionality or performance and point to an overlooked climate footprint in companies' digital solutions.

Andel Energi has reduced its hosting CO2 emissions by 94 percent after changing its hosting setup and optimizing its technical architecture in collaboration with Adapt, which advised Andel Energi in the process. The measures were implemented without redesign or changes in functionality, Andel Energi said in a press release.

Before the change, the website was hosted in a data center connected to the German electricity grid, which emits around 416 grams of CO2 per kWh. After the move, the solution is located in Sweden, where the average is 23 grams of CO2 per kWh. This has reduced emissions from approximately 785 kg of CO2 per year to around 44 kg of CO2 per year.

- Few people think about the fact that our CO2 footprint is connected to the digital solutions we use every day. But hosting is not just a technical choice, it is also a climate responsibility. Together with Adapt, we have minimized the hidden climate effects of the servers and thus contributed to the green transition, says Birgitte Skøtt Lenstrup, who is responsible for Andel Energi's digital channels.

Overlooked point in the ESG report

According to Adapt, the case shows that companies can reduce their digital climate footprint by optimizing existing systems and changing hosting. According to Apapt, experience indicates that digital solutions are often not included as a central part of ESG reporting, even though data centers and digital infrastructure constitute an increasing part of energy consumption and should therefore be included as part of the companies' Scope 3 emissions.

- Companies must start considering their websites and digital platforms as part of their indirect emissions in Scope 3. Otherwise, it will become an overlooked blind spot in the green transition and in companies' ESG strategy, where there is otherwise an obvious opportunity for savings, says Kresten Wiingaard, CEO of Adapt.
