Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wants sanctions on Russian oil and gas to be reinstated. His call comes after a ceasefire was reached in the Middle East. The agreement involves the temporary reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil supply passes.
- Now a ceasefire begins in the Middle East and the Gulf. And I am waiting for the sanctions on Russian oil to be fully reinstated as they were before, Zelensky says.
Last month, the United States eased some of the oil sanctions imposed on Russia. This means that until Saturday, countries can buy Russian oil that has already been shipped from Russia.
The easing of sanctions was done to alleviate a looming oil shortage and the sharp increases in oil prices that the world experienced after the United States and Israel launched attacks on Iran on February 28.
Easing sanctions brings more Russian revenue
Russia has called on the United States to ease sanctions further. Ukraine and its European allies, however, have warned that it could help finance Russia's war against Ukraine.
The general increase in oil prices since the beginning of the war has given Russia increased revenue. The state finances are already at rock bottom after more than four years of war in Ukraine.
Zelenskyj further says that several of Ukraine's allies have contacted him in recent weeks to ask that Ukraine stop the long-range attacks on Russian oil depots, refineries and other types of oil and gas facilities.
- I will not say who asked us to do this, says Zelenskyj.
- But partners asked for it. They asked from different levels - from political and military leadership.
Ukraine has carried out a number of retaliatory attacks against Russian oil and gas facilities and terminals. In recent weeks, Ukrainian forces have hit the ports of Ust-Luga and Primorsk several times.
In connection with the Orthodox Easter holiday, Russia and Ukraine have entered into a short-term ceasefire of 32 hours, which will apply on Saturday and Sunday.
