Biogas in Denmark has reached a milestone with the connection of Nysted Bioenergi, as there are now 60 biogas plants supplying gas to the Danish grid. At the same time, the plant is the first to be connected to the Green Gas Lolland-Falster gas pipeline, which was put into operation in 2024. This is stated by Evida in a press release.

- In just over a decade, we have gone from the first connected biogas plants to now having 60 biogas plants connected to the gas grid. This shows the green transition of the gas distribution system, with large-scale decentralized production of green gas. Biogas makes up around 40 percent of the gas in the Danish grid, and the coherent infrastructure makes green gas a flexible supply source that can be used locally or stored so that it is available when needed, says Kim Søgård Bering Kristensen, CEO of Evida.

The connection is also a step in the development on Lolland-Falster, where there was no access to the gas grid before 2024. The new gas pipeline has created the basis for increased local production of biogas.

Nysted Bioenergi processes 100,000 tons of biomass annually from, among other things, agriculture and sugar production. In full operation, the plant can deliver 8.5 million. m3 biogas, equivalent to the consumption of approximately 3,000 detached houses.

In connection with the connection, Evida has established 8 km of distribution line, 300 meters of branch line and a receiving station that checks the biogas before it is sent into the network.

In 2025, 653 million m3 of biogas was added to the gas network, which reduced CO2 emissions by approximately 1.5 million tons. Several new connections and expansions are being established. Biogas today plays a major role in the Danish energy mix and currently accounts for around 40 percent of the gas in the gas network.
