US President Donald Trump told Fox News on Sunday that he believes there is a "good chance" of making a deal with Iran on Monday.
- I would say there is a good chance tomorrow. They are negotiating now, he tells Fox News.
Trump has previously given Iran a deadline of Monday to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
- If they don't make a deal quickly, I'm considering blowing everything up and taking over the oil.
In a statement to the Wall Street Journal on Sunday, the president says he is giving Iran a deadline of Tuesday evening.
- If they don't do something by Tuesday evening, they won't have any power plants, and they won't have any bridges left, Trump tells the newspaper.
In a short message on his social media, Truth Social, Trump mentions Tuesday at 8 p.m. local time (Wednesday at 2 a.m. Danish time, ed.). It is not directly clear whether this is the new deadline for Iran.
The United States and Israel launched the war against Iran on February 28. According to Trump, this was done to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons and developing missiles that can reach the United States. This prompted the Iranians to close the Strait of Hormuz, through which about a fifth of the world's oil is transported.
On Saturday, Trump said that if Iran does not make a deal with the United States or open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours, then "all hell will break loose."
Earlier Sunday, Trump suggested in a post on Truth Social that the United States would bomb Iran's bridges and power plants if Iran does not reopen the important waterway.
- Open the fucking strait, you crazy bastards, or you will live in Hell - WAIT AND SEE! Praise be to Allah.
Trump's warnings come about two weeks after he first issued an ultimatum to Iran. At the time, he postponed the deadline, citing that "productive talks were underway." However, the Iranians rejected this.
The fact that oil tankers have not been able to pass freely through the Strait of Hormuz for weeks has had noticeable consequences for many countries in the world, and that the price of oil has increased significantly.
In the United States, the price that drivers pay at the country's gas stations has now reached over four dollars per gallon (about 3.8 liters), which is the highest level since 2022 and quite unpopular among Trump's own voters.
There is no immediate confirmation from Iran as to whether negotiations are underway. The Iranians have previously denied that there are any. But there have been reports that the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman have spoken about easing the closure of the strait.
Oman has acted as a mediator in nuclear talks between Iran and the United States and now as a mediator in the approximately five-week-long war.
