The United States can end its war in Iran within two to three weeks. This is what US President Donald Trump said to reporters at the White House on Tuesday, according to the news agencies Reuters and AFP. The words fell when Trump was asked about the consequences of rising fuel prices as a result of the war.
- All I have to do is leave Iran. And we will do that very soon, and then they will fall sharply. But we will finish the job, and I would think that within two weeks - maybe a couple more days - the American forces will leave, says Donald Trump according to AFP.
According to Reuters, the president adds that an agreement with Iran may be reached before the mentioned time frame. Trump says that what he describes as a regime change in Iran has already happened.
Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, was among the first to be killed. His son Mojtaba Khamenei has since taken over as supreme leader of the country, which is a clerical regime.
Earlier on Tuesday, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said that Iran has the "necessary will" to end the ongoing war if guarantees are given that the war will not resume.
This was stated in a statement from the Iranian presidential office after a telephone conversation between Pezeshkian and the President of the European Council, António Costa.
- We possess the necessary will to end this conflict, provided that crucial guarantees are met, Pezeshkian said, according to AFP.
The United States and Israel launched the first wave of attacks on Iran on February 28. According to Trump, this was done to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and missiles that could reach the United States.
Iran responded by attacking a number of targets across the Middle East with missiles and drones, and the war has developed into a regional conflict.
