US President Donald Trump says in a post on Truth Social that the Iranian president has asked for a ceasefire. He goes on to say that the US will "consider" agreeing to it once the Strait of Hormuz is open.
- Until then, we will bomb them into total destruction or - as they say - back to the Stone Age, Trump wrote on Wednesday.
Trump's statement that Iran has asked for a ceasefire has not been independently confirmed. Iran said on Wednesday that the Iranians have the "necessary will" to end the ongoing war with Israel and the US if guarantees are given that the war will not resume.
This was said by Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian in a call with the President of the European Council, António Costa. This was stated in a statement from the Iranian presidential office, according to the AFP news agency.
- We have the necessary will to end this conflict, provided that crucial guarantees are met, Pezeshkian said.
This applies "especially to the guarantees required to prevent a recurrence of the war," the Iranian president added. The United States and Israel launched the first wave of military attacks on Iran on February 28. According to Trump, this was done to prevent Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons and missiles that could reach the United States.
Iran's former supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was killed in the first wave. His son Mojtaba Khamenei has since taken over the post of supreme leader in the country, which is a clerical regime.
