Despite green ambitions, every third Danish home is still heated with fossil fuels or other non-green solutions, even though the majority today use district heating or heat pumps. This is shown by an analysis from Tekniq based on new figures from Statistics Denmark.

According to the analysis, around 30 percent of residential square meters are still heated with fossil fuels, while two out of three today get their heat from district heating or heat pumps.

According to the organization, the development is going in the right direction. The number of green-heated residential square meters has thus increased by 47 percent over the past 15 years. But the pace is not sufficient if the last part of the housing stock is to be converted, the organization assesses.

- It is about much more than kroner and øre on the heating bill. When every third home is still dependent on black energy, it makes us vulnerable in a troubled world. We need to move away from the fossil fuels of the past and towards a green and robust heating supply that ensures security in everyday life, says Maria Schougaard Berntsen, deputy director of Tekniq.

Therefore, Tekniq is calling for political initiatives that can increase the pace of the transition away from, for example, gas and oil boilers.

- Although a switch makes good sense for most homeowners, the leap can feel big. Politicians can make it much shorter by introducing a targeted deduction for heat pumps, expanding the electricity grid and permanently removing the electricity tax. These three things alone can move a lot of homes from black to green, says Maria Schougaard Berntsen, deputy director of Tekniq.

The organization's calculations show that a typical family can save over DKK 7,000 per year by switching from oil or gas boilers to heat pumps or district heating. Over the lifetime of a system, the savings can amount to around 150,000 DKK.
