The EU's foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, welcomes the announcement by US President Donald Trump that there will be no attacks on Iran's energy infrastructure. She said this at a press conference during a visit to Nigeria on Monday:

- The new announcement that there will be no attacks on energy infrastructure is a very welcome development.  Any attack on infrastructure creates chaos in the region and further escalates the war, says Kaja Kallas.

The announcement comes after Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social on Monday that he has asked the Pentagon to "postpone all military attacks on Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a period of five days".  This assumes that "the ongoing meetings and discussions proceed positively", he wrote. The US and Iran are in talks and they are continuing, he wrote.

On Saturday, Trump gave Iran a 48-hour deadline to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. That deadline would have expired at 12:44 a.m. Tuesday night, Danish time. If it didn't happen, Iranian power plants would be "obliterated," he warned.

In response, Iran threatened to attack power plants in Israel and the Gulf. The mutual attacks on oil and gas facilities, together with Iran's attempts to close the Strait of Hormuz, have caused energy prices to skyrocket in Europe.

At the EU summit last week, the heads of state and government of the EU countries stated that they want a de-escalation of the war.

At the same time, the leaders of the EU countries gave their support to a number of temporary measures that will help the EU countries try to bring down energy prices.
