The Swedish government is proposing to temporarily lower taxes on gasoline and diesel. This will apply from May 1 to the end of September, according to the Swedish news agency TT.
In addition to the three government parties, the Sweden Democrats (SD) are also behind the proposal. The tax will initially be lowered to the EU's minimum level.
- In practice, it is about one krone for gasoline and 40 øre for diesel, says SD party leader Jimmie Åkesson at a press conference on Monday.
- It costs about 1.5 billion to do it this way, he adds.
One Swedish krone is equivalent to 69 Danish øre. This means that the price of a temporary Swedish tax reduction will end up close to around one billion converted into Danish krone.
The proposal comes in light of rising oil prices as a result of the US and Israel's attacks on Iran. The Iranian government has responded again by closing shipping traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, through which a fifth of the world's oil passes.
Will also take action against high electricity and gas prices
The parties are also proposing compensation for the Swedes for the higher prices for electricity and gas. It will cost 2.4 billion (1.66 billion Danish kroner).
This is on top of the billion Swedish kronor that has already been allocated to the area. The compensation will be paid for January and February, the proposal states.
- We will compensate for the high electricity prices that have been in effect in January and February, says Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson from the center-right Moderate party (M).
For a family in an electrically heated house, it will be between 1,000 and 2,000 kroner, he adds.
- We see a need for more measures to support families, says Minister of Energy and Business Ebba Busch from the Christian Democrats (KD). The support will not go to companies, she adds.
In addition to M and KD, the government also consists of the Liberals (L).
