Higher oil and gas prices cost companies 113 billion this year

Energy-intensive industries such as transportation and construction stand to be hit hardest by skyrocketing energy prices.

Danish companies are looking at an extra bill of 113 billion kroner in 2026 as a result of rising oil and gas prices. This is according to an analysis from the Confederation of Danish Industry (DI).

It is primarily the transport industry that is facing a hefty extra bill. But construction, which uses fuel-intensive construction machinery, is also being hit.

When it becomes more expensive to transport goods, it spreads throughout the entire chain from producer to consumer, says trade union leader Morten Munch Jespersen from DI.

It is the situation in the Middle East and the problems with shipping oil through the Strait of Hormuz that are triggering the higher prices. The strait is effectively closed to shipping due to the risk of attack, and this has sent the price of oil skyrocketing.

- We are looking at a situation that could persist and worsen. But even if the Strait of Hormuz were to open tomorrow, we would still be looking at an extra bill on the wrong side of 100 billion kroner this year, says Morten Munch Jespersen.

According to the head of the department, this is because many companies within energy-intensive industries have signed long-term energy contracts.

- Many companies buy energy on very long contracts, which have become much more expensive than they were before the problems in the Strait of Hormuz, says Morten Munch Jespersen.

In the Confederation of Danish Industry, politicians should look at whether they can ease the costs for the hardest-hit industries. According to DI's CEO, Lars Sandahl, there are several possible buttons to turn.

- We can drop the kilometer tax for trucks, which is an invisible tax for consumers, we can suspend increases in the CO2 tax while the crisis lasts, or we can ease the sky-high space heating tax. This will give businesses and consumers the necessary air to survive the crisis, says Lars Sandahl in a written comment.
