Denmark reached five GW of solar cell capacity in 2025, and according to the Danish Solar Cell Association, this marks not only a milestone, but also a need to think about energy policy in a new direction. This is stated by the Danish Solar Cell Association in a press release.

At the association's general meeting in 2026, a broader focus was set. Thus, it was decided to switch "from a unilateral focus on expanding more renewable energy from solar energy to a focus on an energy foundation based on solar power in combination with energy storage in an intelligent, flexible and locally anchored energy system. where solar energy should to a greater extent be included as the foundation of an energy system with storage, flexibility and local anchoring rather than solely expanding capacity," the announcement states.

- We have proven that we have the technology and can scale solar energy quickly both on buildings and in the open countryside. Now the challenge is political: To create the framework for solar energy to be optimized and used intelligently in combination with batteries, so that we create a more robust energy system, says Flemming V. Kristensen, chairman of the Danish Solar Cell Association.

The association points to three central political priorities. Firstly, it calls for better frameworks for storage and flexible electricity consumption, so that excess green electricity can be utilized instead of being lost. Secondly, it emphasizes the need for simpler rules and fewer barriers for energy communities and local energy sharing. Finally, the association believes that the current tariffs and taxes should be reformed, as they currently work against flexibility, self-production and investments in energy storage.
