Denmark, along with a number of other countries, declares its readiness to contribute to efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. This is stated in a joint statement from the countries shared by the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday.
- We express our readiness to contribute to relevant efforts to ensure safe passage through the strait. We welcome the commitment from countries that are currently engaged in preparatory planning, the statement says.
On Thursday, the first six countries - Great Britain, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Japan - announced in a statement that they are ready to help ensure safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz. With Friday's statement, a total of 20 countries have now joined the effort.
In addition to Denmark, this also applies to Canada, South Korea, New Zealand, Latvia, Slovenia, Estonia, Norway, Sweden, Finland, the Czech Republic, Romania, Bahrain and Lithuania. It is not immediately clear how the countries will more specifically help secure the passage.
Condemns attacks
In the statement, the countries condemn recent attacks by Iran against unarmed commercial ships. They also condemn what they call Iran's de facto closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
- The consequences of Iran's actions will be felt by people in all parts of the world, especially the most vulnerable, it says.
During the ongoing war in the region, the Strait of Hormuz has been practically closed to shipping due to the risk of attack. The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and Oman. It is a strategic bottleneck for about a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas, and oil tankers must pass through the Strait of Hormuz to enter and exit the Persian Gulf.
To replace some of the oil that cannot exit through the Strait of Hormuz, the International Energy Agency (IEA) has decided to release a total of 400 million barrels of oil from the oil reserves of its member countries. The 20 countries welcome this move.
- We will take further steps to stabilize energy markets, including working with certain producing countries to increase production, it continues.
- We will also work to provide support to the most affected countries, including through the United Nations (UN, ed.) and international financial institutions.
