European gas prices are rising by more than 20 percent on Thursday. This comes after a series of attacks on energy infrastructure in the Middle East. An Iranian natural gas facility connected to the South Pars gas field was attacked on Wednesday.
Iran shares the world's largest natural gas field, located in the Persian Gulf, with Qatar. The Iranian part is called South Pars and makes up about a third, while the rest belongs to Qatar and is called North Dome or North Field, Australia's ABC has written.
According to US President Donald Trump, it was Israel alone that carried out the attack on the Iranian natural gas facility. He is therefore very unhappy that Iran has subsequently responded by bombing Ras Laffan Industrial City, which is Qatar's primary facility for the production of liquefied natural gas.
- The United States knew nothing about this specific attack, and the state of Qatar was in no way involved in it and had no idea that it would take place, Trump has written on his own social media, Truth Social.
- Unless Iran unwisely chooses to attack a very innocent country - in this case Qatar - the United States, with or without the help or consent of Israel, will blow up the entire South Pars gas field with a force and power that Iran has never seen or experienced before.
The attacks have been described by Qatar's Foreign Ministry as a clear violation of international law and a serious threat to global energy security, shipping and the environment.
QatarEnergy, Qatar's state energy company, announced in a statement on Thursday night, according to the Reuters news agency, that the attacks has sparked major fires and caused extensive damage.
The price of a number of different forms of energy has risen sharply in the wake of the conflict in the Middle East. This applies to both gas and oil. This is partly due to the closure of the important passage, the Strait of Hormuz, through which a large part of the world's oil must pass.
The price of a barrel of crude oil has risen 60 percent in a month, while the price of gas has more than doubled in the same period.
