A tanker reported that it was hit by an unknown projectile while anchored near the important oil port of Fujairah in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) late on Monday. This was reported by the United Kingdom Maritime Operations Organization (UKMTO).

The tanker was reportedly hit in the Gulf of Oman, when it was located almost 43 kilometers east of Fujairah. The Gulf of Oman is close to the strategic hub of the Strait of Hormuz.  It is not clear which country the ship comes from or who is said to have carried out the attack on the ship. It is also not clear what the ship was carrying.

Only minor damage has been caused to the ship, the maritime authority responsible for the region reports, according to the media outlet CNN. There are no reports of injuries or environmental consequences as a result of the attack, UKMTO reports.

The route around Fujairah is important and goes around the Strait of Hormuz, which has been largely closed since the US and Israel launched extensive attacks on Iran on February 28. The Revolutionary Guard in Iran has declared that it is in control of the strait.

Fujairah's oil terminal and the nearby industrial area have since been the target of several Iranian attacks.  The authorities in Fujairah reported on Tuesday night Danish time that they are working to get control of a fire that occurred in the industrial area as a result of a drone attack. This is reported by CNN.

This is the 21st time that a vessel has reported an incident in and around the Arabian Gulf, the Strait of Hormuz and the Gulf of Oman since the war began. This is shown by figures from UKMTO according to CNN.

The Strait of Hormuz is an important trade route for oil, among other things. Around 20 percent of the world's oil consumption passes through the narrow strait. The price of crude oil has therefore increased sharply since the war broke out.
