The Liberal Party, whose chairman, Troels Lund Poulsen, is reaching out for the post of prime minister, wants to give drivers in Denmark a helping hand because it is becoming more and more expensive to fill up their car with petrol or diesel.
It is the unstable situation in the Middle East that is affecting prices in the wrong direction, and the Liberal Party will therefore lower petrol and diesel taxes to the EU's minimum rate of 2.67 kroner per liter for petrol and 2.46 kroner per liter for diesel for the rest of 2026.
According to the Liberal Party, this will mean that petrol will fall in price by more than 2.50 kroner per liter, while diesel will fall by approximately 1.80 kroner per liter.
- Since the US started the war against Iran, petrol and diesel prices have been steadily rising, and it has become very expensive for ordinary Danes to fill up their car at the gas station. In Venstre, we want to make it cheaper to be a Dane, and that is why we will now lower the taxes on gasoline and diesel to the EU's minimum rates, says Troels Lund Poulsen in a press release.
As soon as possible
The reduction will take place "as soon as possible", says Venstre, without defining it in more detail.
It is not entirely unexpected that Venstre is making the announcement. Last week, Minister of Economy and Venstre Deputy Chairman Stephanie Lose told Jyllands-Posten that the party would lower the taxes if prices continued to rise in the coming weeks.
The deadline for a final decision is when a new government is in place, it was also said. The proposal to lower taxes to the EU's minimum rate is expected to cost approximately 3.5 billion kroner, according to Venstre.
- This is a proposal that will make it cheaper to be a Dane, and I very much hope that we will be able to implement it quickly, because it will be a very quick and concrete way to ensure that Danes can keep more of their own money, says Troels Lund Poulsen.
- When gasoline prices rise a lot, as they have, it can be particularly felt. That's why I think this is a really good proposal, and it will mean a lot to the individual family when a tank of 40 liters of gasoline becomes more than 100 kroner cheaper, he says.
