The Swedish Coast Guard has boarded a tanker in the Baltic Sea south of Trelleborg in Skåne on Thursday evening. The ship is believed to be a shadow fleet vessel. This is confirmed by Sweden's Minister of Civil Defence, Carl-Oskar Bohlin, to the media outlet SVT. The minister shares more details about the coast guard's efforts in a post on the social media X.

- The Coast Guard has this evening - for the second time within a week - boarded a suspected shadow fleet vessel in Swedish territorial waters, writes Carl-Oskar Bohlin on X.

Last week, the Swedish Coast Guard boarded the cargo ship "Caffa", which was loaded with grain and was on its way to St. Petersburg in Russia. According to Ukrainian authorities, the ship had been involved in the theft of grain from the Crimean peninsula.

The Swedish Transport Agency has subsequently issued an international navigation ban on "Caffa", writes SVT. The captain is also suspected of using false documents.

On Thursday evening, it concerns the 228-meter-long tanker "Sea Owl 1", which is registered in the Comoros. Sweden's Minister of Civil Defense states on X that the ship is suspected of being "stateless".

- It is on the EU's sanctions list and transports oil or other liquid fuel, writes Bohlin on X.

The tanker was on its way to Russia when it was boarded, the coast guard's press officer, Mattias Lindholm, tells SVT.

- It appears to be empty and is lying very lightly in the water, Lindholm tells SVT.

Together with the police task force, the coast guard began a search of the ship and questioning of the crew on Thursday evening. Daniel Stenling, deputy chief of operations at the coast guard, assesses that the risk of safety deficiencies on board the tanker is high.

- On this basis, the vessel cannot be included in what the law of the sea calls harmless passage. The threats to maritime safety and the environment are too great, Daniel Stenling tells SVT.
