The Norwegian Maritime Directorate prohibits ships flying the Norwegian flag from entering the Strait of Hormuz. The Norwegian Maritime Authority wrote this in a press release on Thursday.

- We do not believe that any shipping companies are planning to sail into this area in the near future, says Maritime Director Alf Tore Sørheim in a press release and adds:

- However, as the situation has developed, it is important for us to emphasize that we are now moving from a strong recommendation related to ship traffic in the area to a ban on entering the Strait of Hormuz.

For ships already in the area, the Maritime Authority says that it is up to the shipping company itself to assess safety and decide whether it is safer to sail out than to stay put. The press release emphasizes that the threat level in the area is critical.

- In recent days, civilian ships that have tried to leave the area have been attacked. This is an unacceptable and serious attack on civilian shipping, says Sørheim.

The Strait of Hormuz is located between Iran and Oman. The waters are crucial for the transport of oil and gas out of the states around the Persian Gulf. During the ongoing war in the region, the Strait of Hormuz has been practically closed to shipping due to the risk of attack.

The Revolutionary Guard in Iran has declared that it has control of the strait. On Thursday, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) called its council for an extraordinary meeting due to the situation in the Middle East. The organization writes in a press release.

The meeting will be held on March 18-19 in the capital of England, London, it says.
