Danish electricity customers can look forward to several hours of free electricity on Thursday, even though energy prices have generally increased due to unrest in the Middle East. In the middle of the day, the pure electricity price (spot price) on the electricity market drops below DKK 0 in several parts of the country, which means the first hours of free electricity of the year, excluding various tariffs. OK reports this in a press release.

In Jutland and Funen, electricity will be free between 1 pm and 3 pm, while customers on Zealand and Bornholm will receive free electricity between 2 pm and 3 pm. According to the energy company, the negative prices are due to high production from solar cells and wind turbines in the middle of the day.

- Energy prices are fluctuating wildly at the moment. Although the unrest in the Middle East has generally pushed up the price of electricity, solar cells and wind turbines will produce so much electricity tomorrow at midday that the price will be negative, says Troels Skipper, product manager at the energy company OK.

The last hour with a negative electricity price was in October 2025. This breaks a period of 22 weeks without free electricity, which is the longest period since 2022.

In Western Denmark, the pure electricity price will fall to -0.08 øre per kWh on Thursday at 1 pm, while the price in Eastern Denmark will fall to -0.02 øre per kWh at 2 pm. The electricity price will rise again to over 0 øre per kWh throughout the country when it is 4 pm.

According to OK, however, Danes can expect several hours with low or negative electricity prices in the coming months, typically in the middle of the day, when production from solar cells is highest. At the same time, the energy company emphasizes that electricity customers with fixed-price agreements cannot take advantage of the low and negative electricity prices in the same way as customers with variable electricity agreements.
