GENTOFTE: Gentofte Municipality has decided to slow down the planned district heating expansion in areas where the expansion has not yet been initiated.

The reason is a new analysis that Niras has conducted for the municipality. In the analysis, the engineering company concludes that the planned district heating expansion "in areas that have not yet been initiated has a socio-economic cost that is DKK 277 million higher than if citizens instead establish individual heat pumps".

This means that the socio-economic cost of heating with individual heat pumps is 19 percent lower than the expansion of district heating in the areas that have not yet been initiated.

Therefore, it is timely to slow down the expansion of district heating, says Mayor Michael Fenger (K) in a press release:

- The expansion of the district heating network has been a huge success so far. But it is not economically viable to continue at this time. Therefore, it is an expression of timely care that we are now slowing down. The alternative would be that the prices of district heating would increase significantly for both current and future customers.

The areas where the district heating rollout is underway will continue as planned, and citizens who live in areas where there is already district heating will also continue to be able to join, the municipality writes.

The municipal council is expected to submit a proposal to stop the district heating expansion for consultation on March 23. The consultation will give the affected utility companies and the neighboring municipalities of Gladsaxe Lyngby-Taarbæk the opportunity to provide input to the decision.
