The first wind turbine has now been erected in the Thor offshore wind farm off the west coast of Jutland. The project of almost 1.1 gigawatts will be Denmark's largest offshore wind farm to date. It is being built by RWE and is scheduled to be completed in 2027, when it will be able to supply electricity to more than one million Danish homes, RWE says.

- With the installation of the first turbine, we have reached an important milestone in the delivery of Denmark's largest offshore wind farm. When Thor is fully operational, the project will play a central role in achieving Denmark's climate goals and strengthening the EU's energy independence, says Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind.

The installation work is taking place from the Port of Esbjerg, where the installation ship Brave Tern from Fred Olsen Windcarrier transports and erects three wind turbine sets at a time. A total of 72 Siemens Gamesa wind turbines with a capacity of up to 15 megawatts each are to be installed by the end of 2026. The turbines will be around 148 meters above sea level and have rotor blades of 115 meters.

The offshore wind farm will also have a number of sustainability elements. Among other things, 36 of the turbines' steel towers will be produced with a lower CO2 footprint than traditional steel towers, and some of the turbines will be equipped with reusable rotor blades from Siemens Gamesa.

According to RWE, construction is progressing as planned. In 2025, the transformer station and all foundations for the 72 wind turbines were installed. The project has also received a 30-year permit for electricity production from the Danish Energy Agency.

Thor is being developed in collaboration between RWE, which owns 51 percent, and Norges Bank Investment Management, which owns 49 percent. RWE is responsible for the construction and operation throughout the entire life of the offshore wind farm.
