Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S) will be asked in a live question and answer session on Instagram on Tuesday why she "hates rich people". Mette Frederiksen, whose party has proposed introducing a wealth tax for the country's richest, denies this.
- I don't. I don't hate anyone. At least there are very few, she replies. She does not elaborate on who she hates, if any.
Last week, the Social Democrats kicked off the election campaign with a proposal to introduce a wealth tax in Denmark. The Social Democrats' proposal for a wealth tax would mean that around 22,000 Danes would have to pay 0.5 percent in tax each year on the portion of their wealth that exceeds 25 million kroner.
The CEO of wind turbine manufacturer Vestas, Henrik Andersen, will leave Denmark if a wealth tax is introduced for the country's richest.
- I will spend some of my time figuring out where I will live. It cannot be said more clearly, Henrik Andersen has told Berlingske.
He is also concerned that the proposal will harm Danish competitiveness. For example, he points to entrepreneurs who move when they have become successful.
The Liberal Alliance's chairman, Alex Vanopslagh, is among the followers on Mette Frederiksen's Instagram profile who asked questions during the session. He asks - without getting an answer - "is it true that it was you who proposed abolishing the Great Day of Prayer?" The LA chairman also asks, "why do you want to make the Danes poorer with your envy tax?".
- I believe that we should lift together, and I guess you have never bought that strategy, Alex, replies Mette Frederiksen.
The Prime Minister says in the session on Instagram that she knows very well that a strong private business community contributes to Denmark's economy being in good shape, so that there can be a high level of welfare in the country.
- It's not about envy, it's about balance. And if we want to make the big lift to the primary school and at the same time remove the housing tax on the houses that are especially located in rural areas, it requires some more money.
- And there, wealth tax is our best bet. But I don't hate anyone, says Mette Frederiksen.
