EWII proposes that the group's large battery on Bornholm be used to balance the loads that are straining the electricity grid, and thus the battery could create some much-needed capacity on the island.

EWII: Batteries can alleviate capacity crisis in the electricity grid

Bornholm is a concrete example where the battery is ready, but the solution can be used in many places in the country, the energy group believes.

Companies across the country are being denied access to the electricity grid due to a lack of capacity in Energinet's high-voltage grid. Most recently, Energinet paused new connection projects to the electricity grid for up to three months on Monday to create an overall overview of the consequences of current demand and implemented new measures that can increase capacity, but even though the pause is only temporary, the capacity problems could mean postponement of projects for many years to come.

However, according to new calculations from EWII, the capacity problems could be postponed for several years. The solution is based on flexibility in electricity consumption and smarter use of batteries, which can help relieve pressure and postpone capacity problems in several places in the country. This is stated by EWII A/S in a press release.

As a specific example, the energy group points to its 30 MW/42 MWh battery in Hasle on Bornholm. Here, the battery can be used to smooth out the peak loads that occur when many people consume electricity at the same time. The battery can store power during periods of low consumption and release it again when the load exceeds the capacity of the submarine cable to the island.

According to EWII's calculations, the battery on Bornholm can postpone capacity problems by at least three to four years. At the same time, the group estimates that it will cost 19 million DKK annually to use the battery to increase capacity in the Bornholm part of the electricity grid, while it could cost society billions DKK annually in lost growth and delayed green transition to wait for new cables and construction projects.

- The electricity grid is gasping for more capacity, and in places where companies like EWII already have batteries in place, the batteries will be able to create some much-needed capacity - the effect will be felt within a month. It's fast, it's cheap – and it works, says Lars Bonderup Bjørn, CEO of EWII.

Can be used in several places in the country

He emphasizes that Bornholm is just one case, and that the same principle of storing and releasing electricity during peak periods can be used in other places in the country where the electricity grid is under pressure.

- Bornholm is just one specific case. The same principles can be used in many places in the country. It's about thinking new and using the electricity grid we already have much better, says Lars Bonderup Bjørn.

"Batteries are illustrative and simple to work with, and they provide better control than the other solutions. Batteries are quick to install and the control has been developed. But the other solutions are much cheaper. The thing is that politically there is no excuse for acting on the situation. It is actually possible to improve the situation quite significantly," writes Ewii in a note about its solution model.

EWII therefore calls for political and regulatory action and points out that the current approval process at the Danish Electricity Supply Authority constitutes a barrier to putting the solution into use.

- We are in the middle of a capacity crisis in the electricity grid that is affecting developments throughout the country. A new approach is necessary if we are not to slow down Denmark's green transition and production. We are ready to help – and we can start tomorrow, says Lars Bonderup Bjørn.
