US President Donald Trump calls the US Supreme Court's rejection of the president's increased tariffs very unfortunate and disappointing. This will happen on Wednesday night in a so-called State of the Union address.
The speech is held for members of the two chambers of Congress, the Senate and the House of Representatives, and is the US version of the prime minister's New Year's address.
- It was a very unfortunate decision, says Trump.
According to the media outlet CNN, four of the Supreme Court justices are also in the audience on Wednesday night. These are Chief Justice John Roberts and the three Supreme Court justices Elena Kagan, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.
Three of the four judges present - Roberts, Kagan and Barrett - voted last week to overturn the increased tariffs that Trump imposed last year on imports of goods from a number of countries.
Following the Supreme Court decision, Trump announced that he would impose a new tariff of 10 percent on goods from all countries in the world. It was to take effect on Tuesday, Trump said. On Saturday, Trump announced that the tariff rate would be raised to 15 percent, and that this tariff rate would take effect immediately.
On Tuesday, the AFP news agency and the Bloomberg media reported that the 10 percent tariff had taken effect. It is unclear when the 15 percent tariff will take effect.
In his speech on Wednesday night, Trump also said that he plans for tariffs on imports of foreign goods to replace income taxes in the future.
- Tariffs paid by foreign countries will, as in the past, largely replace the modern system of income taxes, the president said.
According to the AP news agency, this is not realistic. During Trump's second term, revenue from import tariffs has increased from $77 billion to $195 billion in one year.
According to the AP, revenue from import tariffs accounts for less than four percent of federal revenue in the United States, while income taxes and employment contributions account for 84 percent of federal revenue.
