RWE has installed the first offshore wind turbine with both a CO2-reduced steel tower and reusable blades in the Tho Offshore Wind Farm. According to RWE, this is the first time that the two technologies have been combined in one offshore wind farm. The company states this in a press release.

The installation is part of the construction of Denmark's largest offshore wind farm with a capacity of almost 1.1 gigawatts. A total of 72 turbines are to be installed by the end of 2026.

Half of the turbines in Thor will have steel towers produced with a lower CO2 footprint. According to RWE, the production produces at least 63 percent lower emissions than conventional steel. In addition, 40 turbines will be equipped with a total of 120 blades that are designed to be disassembled and reused in other industries. The newly erected turbine is one of the turbines that combines both green initiatives.

- Offshore wind already has one of the lowest CO2 footprints among energy technologies. At RWE, we want to go even further. By using towers made of greener steel and recyclable rotor blades, we are reducing the CO2 footprint further and taking an important step towards fully circular offshore wind, says Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind.

According to RWE, work on the Thor project is progressing according to plan. Foundations and an offshore station have already been installed, and the first turbines are supplying power to the Danish electricity grid. When the park is completed in 2027, it is expected to be able to produce electricity equivalent to the consumption of more than 1 million Danish households.
