ODENSE: District heating Funen uses weather data from DMI to predict the heating demand in Odense Municipality. The planning contributes to lower consumer prices and less climate impact in connection with production.

This is what DMI writes in a press release.

- This knowledge helps us to better plan how our plant will produce the heat, so that it is most beneficial for the consumer, says Matinus Kiilerich Kristensen, operations research analyst at District Heating Funen.

The energy company supplies district heating to most of the residents in the municipality.

Since 2021, District Heating Funen has used forecasts and weather parameters from DMI to train models with artificial intelligence to predict the heat demand.

The models base the predictions on, among other things, wind direction, wind speed, solar radiation, humidity and air temperature.

Forecasts and planning

Specifically, the company can use the forecasts to plan heat production after there are periods of high wind and sun, when prices are also are more advantageous.

During these periods, production from units that emit a higher amount of CO2 can be relaxed, it says. This could be, for example, the burning of biomass.

DMI's data and forecasts are freely available. There are forecasts for the next 55 hours, and they are updated every three hours.

The forecasts are also supplemented with longer forecasts from the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF). This means that, based on the weather data, planning can be done for ten days into the future.

DMI's deputy director, Ulrik Smith Korsholm, calls District Heating Funen a prime example of how the data can be used.

- Early insight is crucial to keeping energy prices down and delivering stable energy.

- District Heating Funen's use of DMI's free data is a lesson in how weather data can be used for both the green transition of our society and to save society and citizens money, it says.

District Heating Funen is owned by the Municipalities of Odense and Nordfunen.
