Slightly fewer people have applied for vocational training after 9th or 10th grade compared to last year. This is shown by new figures from the Ministry of Children and Education.
Around 19 percent have applied for vocational training. Last year, 20 percent and the year before, 19.9 percent applied for vocational training. A vocational training leads to a job as a skilled worker.
Since 2015, there has been a political goal that 30 percent of a youth cohort should apply for vocational training.
The business organization SMVDanmark notes in a press release that the proportion of young people applying for vocational training this year is the lowest since 2017. At that time, 18.5 percent of the cohort applied for vocational training. SMVDanmark's head of education, Kasper Munk Rasmussen, is disappointed that the search is not greater.
- We are faced with declining youth cohorts and an increasing shortage of skilled workers. This will be a major challenge for future growth in Denmark, he says in the statement.
SMVDanmark believes that efforts to find more skilled workers should be a "bound task" for a future government after the general election. In this regard, the organization is proposing a financial carrot to get more young people to take the skilled path.
- We propose that young people be given an extra monthly tax deduction when they start an apprenticeship in a vocational training program, says Kasper Munk Rasmussen.
