Equinor, through its subsidiary Rio Energy, has acquired the 230 MW Esquina do Vento wind project from Vestas and at the same time entered into an agreement for the supply and service of wind turbines for the project in northeastern Brazil. Vestas announced this in a press release.
Construction of the project is expected to begin in March 2027 and be completed before the end of the year. Vestas will also be responsible for operation and maintenance for 30 years. The agreement is the first collaboration between Equinor/Rio Energy and Vestas in Brazil and comes at a time when investments in onshore wind are once again on the rise.
- We look forward to working with Vestas on the Esquina do Vento wind project – an important milestone for Rio Energy and our continued commitment to Brazil's renewable energy market. Despite the current challenges, we believe that onshore wind has great potential to deliver stable, clean and affordable energy and create lasting value for communities and customers across Brazil,” says Roberto Colindres, CEO of Rio Energy.
The project is fully developed by Vestas. The wind turbine manufacturer states that the divestment marks a breakthrough for the company’s development unit, Vestas Development, which was established in 2020 to develop and mature wind projects in strategic markets. By the end of 2025, Vestas Development had a pipeline of 28 GW, with Brazil being a key market.
- Esquina do Vento is a milestone for our project development business, which has focused on increasing the supply of fully developed wind projects in strategic markets. In recent years, we have built and matured our Brazilian portfolio, and this is the first project to reach the Ready to Build stage, says Frédéric Guillaume, Head of Vestas Development in Latin America.
