
Two 32-year-old men died in a work accident at a Vestas wind farm under construction near Frankfurt in the German state of Hesse on Wednesday. This is reported by RechargeNews.
The two men were on a work platform in the upper part of the turbine tower, which was still under construction, according to preliminary information from the police. For reasons that are still unknown, the platform crashed into the tower. According to the police, other employees at the site heard a loud bang and called for help. Police, forensic experts, rescue services and the fire department responded to the scene. The rescue team received the alarm call at 4.45 am on Wednesday morning, but the two men were beyond rescue and, according to the police, were killed at the scene.
The wind farm is being built by the regional developer Hesse Energie and will consist of nine Vestas V172 turbines. According to the manufacturer, the deceased were employed by a subcontractor of the tower supplier Max Bögl.
- A fatal accident occurred at one of our wind turbine assembly sites while working with a mobile work platform. We are deeply affected by the incident. Our thoughts are with the deceased employees of our service provider as well as their families and relatives. The investigation is being carried out by our internal HSE specialists, an external independent expert and the relevant authorities. As a safety measure, we have temporarily suspended similar work until final results are available, says a spokesperson for Max Bögl.
Vestas informs Recharge that the company is deeply affected by the accident and is working with Max Bögl, the subcontractor and the authorities to clarify the cause. The police state that the sequence of events and the exact cause must now be reconstructed with the assistance of experts. An investigation into the accident has been initiated.
