Europe installed 19.1 GW of new wind capacity in 2025. Of this, 15.1 GW was built in the EU-27. At the same time, final investment decisions were taken for €45 billion, financing 20.9 GW of new projects to be built in the coming years.
At the end of the year, total European wind capacity reached 304 GW – 265 GW onshore wind and 39 GW offshore wind. In the EU-27, total capacity is 246 GW, of which 224.5 GW onshore wind and 21.5 GW offshore wind. This is stated by WindEurope in a press release.
- Europe's wind industry is up to the task. In 2025, the industry invested 45 billion euros to make Europe more competitive and secure. But politicians who are considering tinkering with the EU's electricity market design and the architecture of the EU ETS are directly undermining these investments. Changing the rules of the game now would be waving goodbye to competitiveness and energy security, says Tinne van der Straeten, CEO of WindEurope.
Onshore wind accounted for 90 percent of new installations in Europe with 17.2 GW, while offshore wind contributed 2 GW. In the EU, 0.9 GW of offshore wind was installed.
Wind energy covered 19 percent of of the EU's electricity consumption in 2025. Production fell from 475 TWh in 2024 to 465 TWh in 2025, while total electricity consumption was 2,500 TWh. Onshore wind supplied 402 TWh, corresponding to 16 percent of consumption, and offshore wind accounted for 63 TWh or 3 percent.
Denmark did not contribute much to the growth in 2025, with 35 MW of new onshore wind installed. Total Danish wind capacity reached 7,508 MW – 4,856 MW onshore and 2,652 MW offshore. Wind covered 50 percent of Denmark's electricity consumption in 2025, which is significantly above the EU average of 19 percent.
By 2030, WindEurope expects Europe to install 151 GW of new wind capacity. Of this, 112 GW is expected to be built in the EU, bringing the total European capacity to 439 GW – 366 GW onshore wind and 73 GW offshore wind.
