After almost 50 years with the same actor, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency has appointed Sweco to operate the Reference Laboratory for Noise Measurements. This means that the authorities' official noise advisor is changing for the first time since 1977. Sweco informs in a press release.
Since its establishment in 1977, the task has been with the then Sound Engineering Laboratory, today FORCE Technology. With the new agreement, Sweco will be responsible for ensuring uniform noise measurements across the country and for advising the Danish Environmental Protection Agency on professional issues, including in connection with new regulations in the area.
The reference laboratory must also follow international research and translate it into Danish practice. This applies, among other things, to knowledge about the connection between traffic noise and health.
According to the World Health Organization WHO, traffic noise is associated with an increased risk of, among other things, cardiovascular diseases. European estimates indicate that noise pollution is the third largest environmental burden on public health after air pollution and extreme temperatures.
- The Danish Environmental Protection Agency's Reference Laboratory has been the industry's professional beacon for decades and defines how we relate to noise in Denmark. Therefore, it is a great recognition of our professional breadth and depth - and a great responsibility that we are now taking on, says Morten Hell, head of department for Sweco's acoustics department, Acoustica.
Sweco's acoustics department has around 40 specialists and advises on a daily basis on noise from infrastructure and industry as well as on acoustics in construction. In the future, the department will also function as a professional reference for authorities and companies in the field of noise.
