Denmark will have a national emergency preparedness week to be ready for a crisis

Society must be more aware of preparedness in the event of crises, so a national preparedness week should be introduced.

Citizens must have a better understanding of preparedness.  Therefore, an annual national preparedness week is being introduced, which will contribute to a new and stronger understanding of preparedness, where all parts of society must be aware of their role in the community. This is stated in a press release.

- The preparedness week must make Danes aware of how we are all part of the total preparedness - and what our role is. We do this best by involving everyone, preparing and practicing together, says Minister of Preparedness Torsten Schack Pedersen (V).

The preparedness week will be entitled "We are there for Denmark" and will be held the same week as the annual siren warning test. It is week 19, and in 2026 different approaches and activities will be tested, which will form the basis for the future topic week.

These could include, for example, power-free days at schools, emergency plans in companies and visits from local emergency services. This should create a strengthened emergency culture and preparedness in Denmark, where authorities, organizations, business and civil society stand together with citizens on the task.

The week is part of the total emergency preparedness that the government launched on Monday. After the Cold War, the model of a total emergency response faded into the background in favor of a more divided emergency response. This means that each authority plans within its own sector. But in the future, everyone must take personal responsibility.

Total preparedness means that citizens, authorities, companies and civil society must be able to contribute in the event of major incidents, crises, disasters and war.

The week is based on experiences from Sweden and Norway, which show that awareness of preparedness largely comes from involvement and ownership, according to the ministry. On Monday, the government also said that it will introduce a new Kingdom Week in primary schools. It is in week 46. Schoolchildren will learn about the ties to Greenland and the Faroe Islands over a whole week of themed lessons.
