US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has removed a social media post stating that the US Navy had escorted an oil tanker through the Strait of Hormuz. In the removed post, Wright wrote that the purpose of the escort was to ensure that oil "continues to flow to global markets".

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said shortly after the removed post that the US had not escorted the oil tanker. Leavitt confirmed this at a press conference at the White House, Reuters reports.

Shortly after Chris Wright's post, several officials were reporting the same thing. An anonymous US official, speaking to the Reuters news agency, said that the US military has not escorted a ship through the Strait of Hormuz.

A spokesman for Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps explained the same thing, according to Reuters. The Revolutionary Guard Corps is a powerful military force that operates in parallel with Iran's regular army and reports directly to Iran's supreme leader.

The Strait of Hormuz between Oman and Iran has been virtually closed during the ongoing war in Iran. The narrow strait is of great importance to the world's oil trade. About a fifth of the world's total oil consumption passes through the strait.

The price of oil has risen in the wake of the conflict in the Middle East, but fell briefly before the energy minister's post was removed again. Reuters writes.

The rising oil prices were apparently also the reason that Danish shares fell on Monday morning. Here, the Danish C25 stock index fell by around 1.3 percent.

According to Philip Jagd, head of equities at Sampension, the fall should be seen in light of rising oil prices.

- The situation in the Middle East has had a major impact on not only the oil price, but also gas and fertilizer prices and of course the stock markets in the past week, he said in a written comment.

The index consists of the 25 most traded shares on the Copenhagen Stock Exchange measured by turnover and includes companies such as Mærsk, Ørsted and DSV.
